General Information

Since 2002 MDN through its Men’s Health Programme has been actively involved in promoting key health and well being themes with and on behalf of men, through its range of community development work and training across Ireland. The focus of all of all its work is based on a strengths/salutogenic orientation towards awareness raising, signposting and supporting positive behaviour change.

Further promoting Healthy Ireland’s key themes, the MDN’s health work continues to highlight how wellbeing requires a shift in focus from what can go wrong in men’s lives, to focusing on what makes their lives go well. This wellbeing approach also reflects the concept of positive mental health, in which a man can realise his own abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and be able to make a contribution to his community.

The MDN through its engagements and national training continues to highlight that wellbeing reflects the quality of life and the various factors which can influence it over the course of a man’s life.
This is achieved through an integrated approach to our work that involves both a personal development and social determinant focus.

All of MDN’s work is based on a response to the MDN’s Community Development and Family Resource Centre Research carried out in 2009, whose findings called for support and training for engaging men towards better, healthier lives. The work carried out is underpinned by the findings of the National Men’s Health policy, action plan and key Wellbeing focus of Healthy Ireland.

Through all MDN engagements and training, wellbeing and health themes are explored and relevant health promotion information disseminated towards signposting for positive active change.
